Climate issues to go public :: News :: Post-Tribune
GARY -- Residents who are concerned about climate change and its effects in Indiana can get the tools to take action.
A coalition of Indiana environmental groups puts on the Indiana Climate Change Summit on Saturday in Gary.
"What we're hoping to accomplish is to get people in the community some good information about environmental topics right here in Indiana," said Dave Ellis, chairman of the Sierra Club Dunelands group.
"We will also try to help them with some tools to enable them to be better advocates for policy in Indiana and moving away from coal and nuclear-powered electricity and to develop more sustainable practices in the community," Ellis said.
The event will cover how simple things, such as buying florescent light bulbs and using reusable grocery bags, can make a big difference.
Attendees will also learn how to advocate policy changes to legislators and councilmen.
The summit will consist of morning presentations on climate change effects on ecosystems, public health, the economy, faith communities and governance.
There will be afternoon training workshops on sustainability and public policy advocacy.
