Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull has delivered a scathing attack on former Prime Minister John Howard over his climate position.
Mr Turnbull, who took over as Liberal and Opposition Leader during September, told News Limited newspapers that the former PM's biggest mistake was a failure to ratify Kyoto.
Mr Turnbull, who had argued for the coalition to support it's ratification, says that lost key votes in Queensland.
"What the former government failed to recognise was that Kyoto had become a sacramental issue. It had become a very symbolic issue," he said.
"People said: 'you are going to meet the target, why don't you sign the piece of paper?"
He said Mr Howard failed to take the issue seriously.
"I think Queenslanders expect governments and leaders to take climate change seriously. I do take it extremely seriously," Mr Turnbull said.
