Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle has requested federal disaster assistance for 13 southwest and southeastern Wisconsin counties for a major winter storm that hit the area Feb. 5-7.Sept. '08: Wisconsin and Germany join forces to fight global warming - USATODAY.com
The counties named in the request are: Dane, Dodge, Green, Jefferson, Kenosha, Lafayette, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Rock, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha.
The counties incurred record or near-record snowfalls of 12 to 19 inches on those dates. To receive federal emergency snow assistance, a location must have received a record or near record snowfall.
"This winter has been unusually difficult and has strained many crews who have worked long days and nights to keep the roads clear and safe," Doyle said. "The storm that hit Wisconsin on Feb. 5-7 was among our worst, and it really hit many local budgets hard. I am requesting federal assistance to help provide relief to our local governments who have incurred much of these costs.”

Farmers and growers suffering losses during the floods and cold weather earlier this year will be eligible for low-cost loans and other assistance from the federal government.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved three disaster declarations asked for by Gov. Jim Doyle, making aid available in 55 counties, including 39 for damages due to flooding and 16 for damages due to frost, freeze, winterkill and extreme cold.

Four primary and 10 contiguous counties were in the winterkill, freezing rain and extreme cold declaration, including Barron, Lafayette, Polk and St. Croix counties as primary and Burnett, Chippewa, Dunn, Grant, Green, Iowa, Pierce, Rusk, Sawyer and Washburn counties as contiguous.
Two counties, Door as primary and Kewaunee as contiguous, were in the drought, freeze and frost disaster declaration, with 98 percent of the cherry crop in Door County lost this year.
