Frost fighting in New Zealand

The winery had six new $60,000 wind machines operating this year. Each had already completed about 30 hours running time - the equivalent of about $50,000 worth of helicopter frost fighting time.

"We can't afford not to frost-fight," he said.

Bannockburn-based vineyard consultant Robin Dicey said every year was different.

"We got through last year fighting it five times altogether. The year before we fought 28 times and we're already over 20 this year," he said.

"If global warming would happen around October and November I'd be pleased."
