Global sea ice area: now same as in 19-freaking-79

Sea Ice - End of Game Analysis « Climate Audit
As of yesterday the global sea ice anomaly at cryosphere reached 0. Four weeks ago it was at a negative 2.6 million sq kilometers. This is the fasted move in the 30 year history. The sea surface temperature anomaly around the Antarctic remains strongly negative.

As I recall, 1979 came just 3-4 years or so after 1975-76 thereabouts, which was when the climate world was in a panic because we were going into an ice age, and millions were going to die of starvation within ten years because of collapse of world food crops.

So there's some possibility however remote, that back in those days, the Arctic sea ice might even have been abnormally advanced; rather than samo samo perfectly normal. I seem to recall that ther were no polar orbit satellites before 1979 (fancy that); so nobody really has any idea just what normal arctic ice really is; excepot for thostwo old cranky Norwegian ice fishermen, who keep poking holse in it to fish.

And the hell you say, everything is back to hunky dory; it has to be that global warming that Al Gore talks about.

But now we have a problem; with all of that frozen arctic ocean ice, the polar bears can't get through it, to get any seals, so they must be starving in droves; so it is great that they recently were counted in droves.
Well lets face it, its gotta be good for the seals since they don't have to worry about the bears. They do have a problem holding their breath long enough to gewt to where they want to go under all that sea ice.

Howcum we never get it just right?

Well at least New York City is safe for this year from icidation.

I too remember the looming ice age that some in the mid-1970s predicted as imminent. I worked in a bookstore while in college and saw quickie paperbacks on the topic fly off the shelves--for a few weeks before dying.

Same thing happened with Comet Kohoutek. And Y2K.

With apologies to H.L. Mencken, nobody ever went broke overestimating the gullibility of the public.

I'd like to share some of my blogs on this topic and welcome comments:
