The Presidency and the Climate Challenge - Dot Earth Blog - NYTimes.com
I chose a different metaphor when writing drafts of one of my hundreds of articles on the climate challenge a couple of years ago. The line never made the cut, but here it is now:I don't think that's a good metaphor.
It is as if a leaky balloon is being inflated faster than air is escaping. As long as the inflow exceeds the leakage, it will eventually burst.

I think it's a good metaphor. You can't say for sure that the balloon will burst unless you know at what pressure the balloon will burst, and what pressure the air is being fed into the balloon. If the balloon will burst at 10 psi, but is being filled at 8 psi, it will never burst.
