GREG Hunt thought he would get the environment portfolio. Within days of the Howard government's defeat, the Victorian Liberal MP was preparing for the Bali conference on climate change. The issue, after all, had caused considerable perception problems for his party in the lead-up to last year's election.
Hunt got the job. He flew to Bali on a Jetstar flight and slept on a friend's floor. He told The Australian: "I just met every industry group, every environmental group, did media every day and said, 'It's a new day, we're serious about climate change."'
It was a far cry from life in government.
