Winter weather has been wreaking havoc on the Southeast Iowa Regional Airport, and the forecast is not looking favorable for conditions to improve.
Since Burlington was coated with nearly a half an inch of ice last week, flights in and out of the airport have been limited.
"We've had some general aviation flights, but we haven't had commercial flights since Friday," said airport director Mary Beaird.
Great Lakes Airlines had to reroute its twice-daily flights to and from Kansas City, she said.
The airport's surface weather observation station, which provides up-to-date weather conditions to meteorologists, flight dispatchers and pilots, was nonfunctional Friday because sensors were covered with ice. But a technician was able to get it working Saturday, Beaird said.
On Monday, cold weather caused a water pipe to break in the airport's administration office, but Beaird said the break did not have a big impact on the facility.
