10 Maryland Residents Die From Cold Since Oct.
BALTIMORE - Maryland health officials say at least 10 residents have died from the effects of cold weather since October.

The toll includes six deaths in December.

An emergency room doctor is pleading with Edmontonians to bundle up before heading outdoors and pack survival gear before hitting the highways this holiday season.

Dr. Louis Francescutti said it's only a matter of time before the bitter cold weather is blamed for another death.

"I've seen more frostbite this year than I've ever seen in the past," said Francescutti. "I think it's just a matter of time before we start finding frozen bodies out there."

Holbrook said witnesses found Walker in medical distress, and he died before paramedics provided assistance. His body was partially nude, and Holbrook said that is consistent with hypothermia.

"You become disoriented and oftentimes there is a sensation that you are overheating," Holbrook said in describing hypothermia. "People do try to get their clothing loose to where it ventilates."

Blood stains were visible on a white door at the church's side entrance and on a handrail near the main entrance. Holbrook said investigators believe Walker tried to enter the church for shelter. The chief said the bloodstains could be linked to various cuts incurred from falling.

EUGENE, Ore. -- The homeless man who froze to death Tuesday evening, believed to be the first victim of Oregon's snow, was a decorated war veteran who earned a master's degree from the University of Oregon.

Thomas Lawrence Egan, 60, was found partially covered in snow near the corner of Blair Boulevard and West First Avenue. According to the Lane County Medical Examiner's office, he died from exposure to the cold.
