The fear is that since carbon permits are limited to $25 a tonne, and many are being given away, the emissions trading scheme will simply add a little lead to the saddlebags of heavy polluters without giving enough incentive for investors to switch to emissions-free technology.

The apparent selections for Barack Obama’s environmental team are as much a gift to the anti-capitalist left as they could have hoped for, a team far more anti-business than Obama’s economic advisors. Indeed, the coming battles between those two groups should make an interesting spectacle. Let’s hope the American economy isn’t mortally wounded in the crossfire.
President-elect Barack Obama's new environmental team may bode ill — trillions of dollars of ill — if they are true to their green colors and implement administratively what even the Democratic-controlled Congress has refused to do legislatively, all in the name of saving America from global warming.
