BlueOregon: Portland plays with the big boys
Given Portland's prominence on the global stage in fighting global warming, it strikes me that there may be an economic opportunity here. Would it be possible to sell knowledge and technologies designed to fight global warming to other countries and cities? Could services and products designed to fight global warming create jobs here? I'm not qualified to answer that question adequately, but if powerful people like President Clinton and Mayor Bloomberg are now leading the charge, I think the time has come for local and state elected officials to "sell" our global warming innovation and expertise in the same way we sell our wheat, our fruit and our athletic apparel. Good news for people who have nowhere to go when the cold weather hits this winter. Multnomah County and the City of Portland have joined forces to create two Warming Centers that will provide the homeless with a place to stay during the cold season. The first center, operated by Human Solutions, open at 7 p.m. Dec. 8. It will focus on providing a warm place to stay for homeless families.

Human Solutions, a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping low-income and homeless families move toward self sufficiency, will operate the family Warming Center. "We know that without the Warming Center, there are families who would have no place to stay, and would otherwise be sleeping in cars, unheated buildings, and outside. This is too dangerous for families with small children," says Jean DeMaster, Executive Director of Human Solutions.
