I have seen several claims like this one — arguing that Sen. Obama’s meeting with Al Gore on Tuesday was part of a process to bring Gore formally on board the Obama administration as head of EPA, the Department of Energy, or “climate czar.” To my mind, the notion is absurd — if only because Al Gore would not subject himself to a Senate confirmation grilling. Then there’s the LEED parade. Harvard is storming ahead with LEED-certified projects (12 completed so far, a task managed by a full-time staff of 18) and is seeking Gold (or equivalent standards) for the entirety of its new 130-acre campus across the Charles River from Cambridge, in Allston, which will see the addition of 10 million square feet of new space over the next 50 years.

No doubt there’s more than a little peer pressure in all of this—a rivalry of the greenest. (For the record, Dartmouth and Harvard claim that honor among the Ivies, according to the Endowments Institute.)
