Temperatures in the Czech Republic have risen above 0 for the first time in weeks, and while that’s good news for most of us, for the homeless slightly warmer weather could mean the difference between life and death. So far this winter, over 20 people – most of them homeless – have died as a consequence of freezing weather. Although there is no official data available, the numbers are definitely higher than in the last couple of years. CLIMATE change may well be the most profound challenge facing young people in the 21st Century.
Already, rising temperatures have begun to impact our food and water supplies, raise sea levels, melt ice sheets and increase the number and intensity of severe weather events.
In the last few years I’ve worked to help people who have lost their homes, jobs and loved ones in natural disasters all over the world. These problems will only get worse if we don’t do something today to stop our planet from getting warmer.
The good news is that we already know what causes global warming and what we have to do to stop it.
