What began as an “Inconvenient Truth” has become the biggest hoax since War of the Worlds and spawned a green cult that vows to stop evolution as well as climate change, regardless of the cost to the environment or the economy. By parlaying a myth into a fortune, Gore has breathed life into an old saying: Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of American educators.
Tidal wave of change ahead
But the secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organisation, Michel Jarraud, is adamant the major trend is still unmistakably one of warming.

"If we look at the trajectory over the last 160 years, it overlays a large natural variability and that's what causes confusion," he says.

While humanity alternately swelters and freezes and the debate about global warming continues to rage, it might pay to err on the side of caution.

Why not clean up our act now, embrace alternative energy sources and curtail the amount of carbon dioxide released into the air. It certainly can't do any harm, and it just might save the planet.

On Tuesday Stavros Dimas, the E.U. environment commissioner, published an open letter to the president reinforcing the idea that the United States bears a special responsibility to take swift action to lower emissions.
