Maybe not -78F, but very cold in Alaska. I wonder how fast the permafrost is melting?

Day to Day, January 9, 2009 · Right now it's cold in Alaska. Really cold. In the town of Tok, it was 78 degrees below zero yesterday. Aliza Sherman Risdahland her family moved to Tok two weeks ago. TODAY MARKS THE 14TH DAY IN A ROW WITH VERY COLD TEMPERATURES IN FAIRBANKS AND MUCH OF INTERIOR ALASKA. TEMPERATURES REMAIN IN THE 30 TO 50 BELOW RANGE OVER MUCH OF THE INTERIOR. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES OF THIS COLD SNAP HAVE BEEN IN THE YUKON FLATS AND FROM EAGLE TO TOK WHERE TEMPERATURES HAVE REMAINED BETWEEN 45 AND 65 BELOW FOR MUCH OF THE LAST TWO WEEKS. THE COLDEST READING SO FAR THIS WINTER WAS 68 BELOW AT CHICKEN ON JANUARY 8TH. THE COLDEST OFFICIAL READING IN TOK SO FAR HAS BEEN 63 BELOW. SOME PUBLICIZED UNOFFICIAL READINGS FROM TOK APPEAR TO BE IN ERROR BASED ON NEARBY OFFICIAL TEMPERATURE STATIONS AND SATELLITE TEMPERATURE READINGS.
