Researcher turns up heat on skeptics
When University of Illinois at Chicago polar researcher Peter Doran published a report seven years ago showing most of Antarctica had cooled in recent years, he didn't expect his scientific work to become ammunition in the political debate about global warming.
...
"It's really dangerous for the public to think we are still debating about global warming,'' he said.
...
One of the global-warming skeptics who quoted Doran's earlier study, Patrick Michaels, a scientist at the University of Virginia and fellow at the Cato Institute, said he still believes Doran's earlier study provides evidence of doubt about global warming. Michaels said he actually agrees that human activity has contributed to global warming but disagrees with those who predict it means certain doom and gloom.

"There is a difference between saying global warming is real and saying global warming is something you should spend huge amounts of national capital on,'' said Michaels, who holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Chicago.

Let me be clear: I hate air pollution.

When I am in a traffic jam on the 10 Freeway in Los Angeles, with thousands of cars and trucks belching out carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, I feel as if I'm being gassed by my fellow motorists -- and they probably feel the same way about me.

I am not entirely convinced that the burning of gasoline causes climate change, and there are smart people with good points on both sides of this issue. But I do assume that filling the atmosphere with CO and too much CO2 is not good for children and most other living things (although C02 is good for plants).
