Many are commenting on the abnormally cold weather currently affecting Thailand, apparently caused by cold air blowing in from China. The psychological barrier of 20 degrees Celsius has been breached at night and local tourists have complained that it’s too cold to sit on the beach! HA NOI — More elderly people and children in northern provinces had been hospitalised with respiratory ailments due to the extreme cold, said doctors in Ha Noi’s hospitals.

On average, 2,000 children are being seen by doctors at the Central Paediatrics Hospital daily, an increase of 40 per cent.

In Yen Bai Province, authorities in each commune would be punished if 10 or more buffalo or cows die because of exposure to the cold, said Nguyen Van Binh, deputy chairman of Yen Bai Province’s People’s Committee.

However, severe coldness would seriously affect crops, said Phan Huy Thong, deputy head of Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry’s Cultivation Department.
According to the statistics of the department, 20 per cent of rice seeds for the winter-spring crop in northern provinces have died due to the cold weather.
