Cruise ship with 106 people on board "stuck in ice" in Antarctica -Times Online
A cruise ship ran aground in Antarctica yesterday stranding 106 passengers – including 17 Britons – on board.

The Bahaman-flagged Ocean Nova became stuck in ice about one mile from the San Martin Argentine base, pushed by extremely high winds into craggy rocks, Patrick Shaw, president of Quark Expeditions, said.

Critics of Antarctic tourism growth have warned of potential mishaps, and the Ocean Nova is the second tourist ship in two months to run into trouble there. In December, Ushuaia ran aground near the entrance to Wilhemina Bay and had to be freed by a Chilean tugboat. Aboard were 82 passengers.

Currently the situation remains stable and passengers are enjoying the regularly scheduled lecture program.

After the wildlife watch under the sun that had emerged, we attended Part Two of the Climate Change and Global Warming discussion, led by Gunter. Gunter lived in Fairbanks, Alaska, before his retirement. Much of his research work focused on the Arctic, and in particular Alaska.
