Once upon a time, about 250,000 years ago, there were only brown bears. Then it got warm and the Boreal Forest grew up to the Arctic Ocean. So some of the more adventurous brown bears moved north to stretch their legs and found seals. But seals were really hard to catch so you had to learn to swim really good. Then they noted that their brown coats stood out against the ice, so they had to turn white to not scare the seals.
And then along came man and said WOW -- look at all this tundra, Southerners know it as peat bog. And look at all the cute polar bears who were obviously here all along.
The moral of the story -- correlation is not causation.
