Marlborough Helicopters managing director Owen Dodson said they also had machines on standby last night. The request was unusual, Mr Dodson said.
"We've never done any work at this time of year, although we were put on standby a couple of years ago when someone was worried about their young vines. It would be a very unusual to get a frost this early."
Southern winegrowers were able to fight off the weekend's frosty snap with the help of wind machines and helicopters.
Grower Nick Mills, in Wanaka, said his was one of many vineyards in the area that had to hire helicopters during the weekend to ward off the threat of frost.
