The candle was lit as people across the world were urged to turn off their power in a global bid to call attention to climate change.
The family from Church Road in Ashprington, near Totnes, turned off their power and lit a candle to mark Earth Hour at 10pm on Saturday.
The two adults and three children returned from a walk to find a fire in the attic bedroom of their detached bungalow.
Two fire appliances from Totnes attended and they used two breathing apparatus sets, one hose reel and a thermal imaging camera at the incident.
The flame had set fire to magazines and newspapers and the home owners returned just as bedding caught alight.
The blackout struck during the evening rush hour causing havoc on the city's roads as traffic signals and street lights went dead.
Sydney Harbour Tunnel was closed in both directions and major highways feeding into the city also shut down.
The power outage, which hit the city centre and many suburbs, left some terrified citizens stuck in the lifts of blacked-out tower blocks.
The world-famous Sydney Opera House was forced to cancel the evening's performances due to the lack of power supply.
...
The blackout came two days after Sydney deliberately killed the lights for Earth Hour as part of a global call for action on climate change.
