Marlborough charcoal technology company Carbonscape is one of five semifinalists out of 300 international entrants in a competition to find the most innovative way to fight climate change.

The winner of the Climate Change Challenge, run by the Financial Times, will receive a US$75,000 (NZ$135,000) prize.

Marlborough firm Carbonscape has developed a supersonic microwave that converts waste material into charcoal, locking in the carbon dioxide for thousands of years.

Its industrial-scale machine in Blenheim is capable of turning 10 kilograms of woodchip into charcoal in 10 minutes.
