Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, sounded off this week on a "cap-and-trade" measure that would cap the emission of pollutants while offering companies the right to sell each other permits that would allow for greater emissions. Opponents argue any costs incurred by companies to meet these caps would be passed onto consumers.

"This is just about economic suicide," Rogers said Monday in an interview at the Daily Press & Argus offices.

The lawmaker pointed to several negative side effects of the plan, including a 140 percent increase on the cost of gasoline and 177 percent hike on electric bills. There are other issues, too, he added.

"Here's what's frustrating to me: Europe has already done this; they've had corruption problems and, remember, if you're trading something you can't really see, somebody's going to take advantage of this," he said.
