Electric Cars: Let's pay manufacturers to build them, and then let's pay customers to buy them
The British government signaled firm backing for low-carbon, electric cars on Thursday with millions of pounds in subsidies for consumers who want to buy them. But whether that sum of money is enough to tilt the market towards a predominantly electric future remained an open question.

The incentives amount to between 2,000 pounds to 5,000 pounds ($2,985 to $7,463) for each buyer, making electric cars “a real option for motorists” when a crop of models becomes available starting in 2011, said Britain’s transport secretary, Geoff Hoon.
