Fairbanks City Council OKs muscle cars for cops
FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks City Council voted to support the purchase of five new police cars for Fairbanks police despite Councilman John Eberhart’s protest.

Fairbanks Police will purchase five new Dodge Chargers, fully loaded with police equipment and a hemi V-8 engine to replace older vehicles.

Acting Police Chief Brad Johnson said the cars were chosen based on research that said the Dodge performed better in northern climates and Fairbanks’ harsh winter environment.

In a town hall discussion this weekend, a group of Massachusetts environmental activists called for the federal government to implement a plan by former Vice President Al Gore ’69 to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from U.S. electric generation within 10 years.

Speakers at the discussion—which was co-sponsored by Harvard’s Environmental Action Committee—said that Gore’s plan, known as “RePower America,” was highly viable because it focused on the importance of dealing with carbon dioxide emissions on a national level, and not on a state level.

(04-20) 20:37 PDT -- Former Vice President Al Gore said Monday that this year is "the Gettysburg" for the environment and that the United States will have to lead the fight against global warming if true progress is going to be made.

Gore made the comments during his keynote presentation of the Goldman Environmental Prize at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco.
