Sen. Specter’s defection might make it easier for the Senate to pass contentious legislation like a climate-change bill. That doesn’t mean the bill will be any toothier.

U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann (MN-06) announced today her appointment by Leader John Boehner to the House GOP American Energy Solutions Group, which will work on crafting Republican solutions to lower energy prices for American families and small businesses.

“Right now, Democrats in Washington are considering energy legislation that will significantly increase the financial burden placed on families and small businesses,” said Bachmann. “At a time when the American economy is experiencing a serious recession, the last thing Washington should do is restrict the development of cheaper energy and increase taxes to pay for retro energy ideas..."

Doug Holtz-Eakin, a former top presidential campaign aide to McCain, said the GOP is well aware that climate change is a serious issue. But there is no support for the current House Democratic approach, which links a cap-and-trade program for carbon dioxide emissions with other mandates for renewable energy and other initiatives. "You get a funny picture as a result," he said.
