STAFF at a Taunton cosmetics store offered passers-by a bit of a nibble in a bid to get people to do their bit for the planet.

People were invited to join the ‘Climate Change is No Picnic’ event on the street outside Lush, in North Street, last Thursday.

The aim was to get people to use trains instead of planes.

Overall, the Waxman-Markey proposal will significantly raise pump prices as well as electric bills. This is a regressive tax that harms the working poor the most. At the same time, it would leave a million or more people without a paycheck to deal with the higher costs.

Is all this economic pain justified by the environmental gain? Even assuming the worst of global warming – and growing scientific evidence is turning sharply away from this assumption – the Waxman-Markey bill would make little or no difference.

BARCELONA, May 28 - Ken Newcombe had an idea, and the proverbial lightbulb that appeared over his head was an energy efficient one, not a traditional electric one.

The former head of carbon emissions trading at investment bank Goldman Sachs started his own carbon finance business last year, C-Quest Capital. He hopes to raise $500 million for a fund that invests in clean energy projects including replacing household lightbulbs in India.

"The project validation is under way, but we may lose offsets because we are unable to get registration before a significant number of CFLs are distributed," he said.
