Climate change sceptics 'impressive': Fielding
Senator Fielding said he was impressed by some of the data presented at the climate change sceptics' conference: namely that, although carbon emissions had increased in the last 10 years, global temperature had not.

He said scientists at the conference had advanced other explanations, such as the relationship between solar activity and solar energy hitting the Earth to explain climate change.

Senator Fielding said that he had discussed the charts with the senior White House advisers and they had agreed to provide him with any rebutting or alternative material.

"They [the White House] have assured me there is enough of a strong link between carbon emissions and global warming," he said.

"I think we need to do everything we can to protect the environment, but I don't see any real evidence of man-caused global warming," Frazier said.

Many others there had a similar view.

"It's a crock," said Dan Cleary of Spring Hill, there with his wife, Stephanie, and their four young children.

"We definitely don't buy into that," she said.

$1.9 trillion tax hike over 10 years. Gas would go over $8 a gallon, electricity prices would double, and millions of jobs would be lost in this country.

That may be one less vote for Kevin Rudd’s plan to force billions of dollars on taxes on business to cut emissions that may well not be causing the world to warm.

How many others with an open mind would find their convictions shaken if likewise exposed to a debate on, say, the ABC? It would be a very interesting test for the ABC to hold a three-against-three debate by experts on what it would claim is the greatest issue now facing humanity.

But we know how reluctant the national broadcaster has been to allow doubt.

STEVE FIELDING: Well, you've got to challenge both sides. And up until now, I, like most Australians, have just believed one side of the story totally. I've never - we've never really considered as Australia, there's been never a real debate about looking at the other side of it. And I think we've all just believed that it's definitely global warming is a real issue and global warming is driven by carbon emissions. Now, the questions - and these scientists are pretty reputable yesterday. For them to actually say so strongly and to just to discount it out of hand I think is foolish, Tony, and I don't think we've had the proper debate in Australia about this issue. And therefore, I think, you know, I need to actually be convinced myself. Now obviously, the Rudd Government are totally convinced. I need to bring back the information that I've got from yesterday, what I'll hear today, over the next couple of days, and sit down with Penny Wong and also the Rudd Government and just have them challenge it back and then I'll actually, then maybe even look at the UK and what they've done. And then make a final decision.
