ND spring wheat emergence slowed by weather Farm and Ranch Guide: Production News
Cool, wet weather across North Dakota continues to impact the planting and emergence of the spring wheat crop.

According to the latest Crop Progress Report released by USDA on June 8, spring wheat planting in North Dakota was 94 percent complete, however, it’s likely that the intended acreage of the crop will never be reached. As a result of the late planting and cool weather conditions just 75 percent of the crop has emerged compared to the 5-year average of 96 percent.

While wet weather is actually beneficial for emerging spring wheat, cool temperatures are quite detrimental.

The Smoot-Hawley tariff of 1930 ignited reciprocal protectionism that suffocated global trade and deepened the Depression. The cap-and-trade legislation passed recently by a House committee is Smoot-Hawley in drag: It contains provisions for tariffs on imports designated "carbon-intensive" -- goods manufactured under less carbon-restrictive rules than those of the proposed U.S. cap-and-trade regime. Eco-protectionism is a recipe for reciprocity. [Via The Chilling Effect]
