McKibben noted that, each summer in the Arctic, an area of ice, the size of California melts away, due to global warming. He added that there is now 25 per cent less ice in the Arctic than at any time in human history or even during pre-historic times.

He cited the 200 per cent increase in dengue fever in Asia since 2000 as an example of how problems associated with warm, wet environments are increasing. He himself had contracted dengue fever in Bangladesh several years ago, he said.
