It is an interesting case study in human folly to see how long the establishment can cling to the myth in defiance of the reality. As Lawrence Peter, author of “The Peter Principle”, put it, “Bureaucrats will cling to the status quo, long after the quo has lost its status”.

The BBC used to pride itself on its balance and impartiality. Now it cannot bring itself to recognise that there are two sides to an argument.

It’s Thursday night and Brown-Eyes and I are meeting some of her friends at the Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria, Queens. Even though it’s July and the planet’s in the throes of global warming, the evening temperature is a cool sixty-one degrees. Maybe the world isn’t coming to an end after all.
