When It Comes to Climate Change and Government, the Magic Word is "Power". - AIP Blog - American Issues Project
The question I keep asking myself, though, is why? Why are the Democrats so determined to shove through a bill their own supporters admit would gutshoot the economy at its weakest moment in half a century? Why are they so certain that global warming will continue despite direct evidence that the planet isn't warming right now? Why do they persist in pushing for alternative fuels that, even if they meet the Democrats' predictions, won't make up enough of our energy needs to fuel growth unless growth slows down considerably? Why are they trying to ram home a bill that, under the rosiest predictions, won't even account for half a degree Celsius change in the temperature of the planet?

Have they lost their minds or is there something else they want?

As much as we'd like to think otherwise, the Democrats have not gone suddenly and irrevocably insane. IN fact, just the opposite is true. I've concluded that they do want something, and they've decided now is the time to get it.

What they want, quite simply, is power.
Airport bosses told to "stop whingeing" by Transport Minister (From The Northern Echo)
THE Transport Secretary yesterday told the owner of Durham Tees Valley Airport to stop whingeing about 'green' taxes, adding: 'You're doomed if you don't pay your fair share'.

Lord Adonis poured scorn on claims by Peel Airports Group that rising air passenger duty (APD) was damaging regional airports and had killed off Durham's air link to London.

Instead, he told MPs that the level of duty "broadly meets the environmental costs" of flying, which is widely recognised as a growing cause of global warming.

And he added: "To be quite frank, I don't think aviation has a credible future unless it is able to make a bigger contribution to meeting its environmental costs.
...
But, under questioning, he conceded that the money raised goes into the general Treasury "pot", rather than being ring-fenced for fighting climate change.
