I wonder what people, generations from now, will think about our current obsession with — not to say hysteria over — global warming. Paul Johnson, for one, thinks that people will think we underwent a bout of mass madness. I imagine they will. Senator Stabenow, from my home state of Michigan, has said, “Climate change is very real. Global warming creates volatility. I feel it when I’m flying.” This is the type of thing that kindergarteners might say, before being gently disabused by their parents.

Yet despite Congress’ signal that these excess revenues will not materialize, the President’s mid-session budget update has once again proposed to spend over $620 billion on the make-work pay credit and new energy spending. The White House has not clarified whether these expensive policies are contingent on these enormous cap-and-trade revenues somehow materializing, or whether the President is willing to simply add $620 billion to the budget deficit for these proposals.

Fortunately, members of the Senate are beginning to hear the ringing voices of dissent from the countryside about the climate change bill. They will return to Capitol Hill after Labor Day with the knowledge that the bill in its current form will inflict serious harm to U.S. agriculture and the economy as a whole. Once again, the grassroots voices of Farm Bureau members are making a difference.

Come on, EPA. You say there is overwhelming evidence for AGW. Fight. Put the skepticism to bed.

Or don’t, and give anyone who cares every reason they need to question — and reject — your attempt to ram through the agenda without making your case.
