British Airways was accused of hypocrisy as the airline prepared to launch a luxury all-business service between London and New York, with just 32 seats on an aircraft normally fitted for 100 people, days after chief executive Willie Walsh pledged a drastic cut in emissions.

Hélène Pelosse, the director-general of the International Renewable Energy Agency, which was established this year and has interim headquarters in Abu Dhabi, says absolutely not.

“The Clean Development Mechanism is not called clean out of any reason – only 100 percent renewable energy is clean,” Ms. Pelosse said in a statement last week. Including “nuclear and CCS projects in developing markets into the mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol is a step backwards,” she said.
