SHANGHAI—China's ambition to create "green cities" powered by huge wind farms comes with a dirty little secret: Dozens of new coal-fired power plants need to be installed as well.
Part of the reason is that wind power depends on, well, the wind. To safeguard against blackouts when conditions are too calm, officials have turned to coal-fired power as a backup.

This is a story that my students working on green physics science fair projects discussed in class today. We thought that coal would be a cheap backup fuel, but we also thought that there are less polluting power alternatives that they could use as a backup. Hydroelectric power was an option that we discussed. What other options do they have that would create fewer air pollution particles than burning coal?
regarding the comment above:
In the the event your question about low air pollution is not a rethoric one, the answer is obviously NUCLEAR POWER !!! Learn more at www.truthaboutenergy.com
P.S.: China is planning to build 130 Gigawatts (that's 130'000 MW) capacity of new nuclear power plants until the year 2030, and has already started construction on some of the plants
