Euro wind producers want billions for sea turbines
Offshore wind is expensive and can only compete with fossil fuels when oil hits record highs, such as the $147 a barrel it was trading at last July. In its defense, Kjaer said the costs of wind power are fixed — unlike fluctuating market prices for coal or gas.

Kjaer said the offshore wind industry needs more help to start work. Installing wind farms needs ships that cost up to euro250 million, he said. Maintenance ships and harbors should also be in place to keep the turbines in working order.
