Our local leaders are not immune to utilizing this warped definition of "wealthy." For example, the "wealthy" in Fort Collins are now paying three times more for their trash pickup in order to conform to our own nonvoted-upon "Climate Action Plan" the Fort Collins version of cap and trade.

Environmentalists are struggling to stay on the offensive in the face of a vigorous campaign against the House-passed cap-and-trade bill by oil and business interests. In one such effort, the American Farm Bureau Federation has joined with the American Petroleum Institute and the National Association of Manufacturers to sponsor rallies and a letter-writing campaign to members of Congress, under the name of a group called Energy Citizens.

"There's been no trouble getting people there (at the rallies), Farm Bureau people, regular citizens, anybody," said Rick Krause, who follows climate issues for the farm bureau.

Members of Congress also got an earful about climate legislation at town meetings during the August recess. Sen. Charles Grassley, the senior Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said the climate issue came up at most of the 16 meetings he held during the month. What he heard from agriculture "was complete opposition," he said.

Mike Ennis and Bonnie Coombs of Warren stood on the sidewalk along Capital Avenue, attracting honks from several drivers. They carried signs that read "No cap and trade, We will go green cause we want to," "Longtime tax payer, first time protester," and "535 of them, 300 million of us. It is time to clean house."

The proposed cap and trade program was one of the main issues that drew them to the rally.
