...But many others, including Republican gubernatorial candidate Pat Anderson, say he's pulled back from earlier positions aimed at addressing human-caused global warming. And as someone who doesn't believe in it, Anderson said she's happy to see it.

"I think, clearly, he has changed some of his positions on the issue, and I think a lot of people have,'' said Anderson, who plans to resign this week as president of the Minnesota Free Market Institute to concentrate on her candidacy.

But Sen. Anderson, a longtime clean-energy advocate, contends Pawlenty had to be prompted to take many of the stances he's held, however briefly.

"I really don't know what is in his heart, but I suspect he doesn't care about climate change,'' [Ellen] Anderson said. "The very passionate speeches he made in the last couple of years — he's turned his back on everything he has said.''
