Officers stationed outside the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station near Nottingham are facing groups of protesters, around 50-strong in places.
Some officers have been attacked in minor skirmishes, Nottingham Police said.
Activists say they are determined to enter the plant and close it down, disrupting power supplies to millions of people.

So they should close down the Power plant - be as 'sincere" as possible, but say it is for the "safety" of the protesters.
Then take about a week to start it back up due to "safety" reasons.
Once people get a taste of living a 17th century lifestyle without electricity for lights, water being pumped for showers and toilet flushing, they'll think differently about so called Eco Protesters.
I'm with Fred, but would add one caveat.
It's time for a return to the "Scarlet Letter". When arrested, mark all civil disobedience protesters with a temporary tattoo(henna is a nice natural substance, how could they protest that) in a prominent facial location, say forehead or cheek. Then make it illegal for any merchant to sell/rent/loan them any product that utilized fossil fuel in making it to the market place, or the merchant faces a large fine.
Restriction lasts until the tattoo wears out.
I'd say one round of tattooing would be about the last for any protester, and you are helping them achieve their personal goal of lower emissions in the process.
Win/Win?
