Radio New Zealand News: Cold weather sees electricity prices spike
Prices spiked three times on Monday to extraordinary heights, rising from a typical 6 - 15 cents per kilowatt hour for much of the day to about $45 for short periods.

Electricity analyst Brian Leyland blames this partly on the cold weather and partly on not enough electricity capacity held in reserve in the North Island.

On a personal level, Pachauri advised citizens of developed countries to cut back on eating meat, which is extremely energy intensive to produce; walk instead of drive when possible; and turn the thermostat up or down a bit.

Put on a sweater and turn down the thermostat instead of wearing a T-shirt indoors in winter, he said.
Flashback: [For the guy who advises you to travel by foot, the airport is "where everybody knows your name"]
NEW DELHI: A colleague of Dr Rajendra Kumar Pachauri in the IPCC remembers travelling with him through Heathrow airport, London. "The airport employees and the airline staff all recognised and wished him as he walked through the busy airport. It was crazy."

Not that the cabin crew or the airport authorities knew much about climate change and IPCC, but it's hard to forget a man who has probably spent more time in the air than he has in Delhi, his base, since he became IPCC chief. Pachauri himself often jokes that he "lives at 30,000 feet".
