Alberta cancels funding for ‘green’ transportation
CALGARY - Money budgeted as part of a highly touted $2-billion allocation for "green" light rail and public transportation projects has been quietly shelved this year by the deficit-ridden Alberta government.

The Stelmach government said it has not backtracked from its commitment to the Green Transit Incentives Program, announced with great fanfare in July 2008. The fund was meant to showcase how Alberta is using energy resources revenue to fight climate change.

The political debate also sows confusion at electricity providers and mining companies as they prepare to deal with the proposed cap-and-trade carbon emissions trading plan.

“From a business perspective we would just like the bill passed and then our members can get on with it,” Australian Industry Group Chief Executive Officer Heather Ridout said in a telephone interview yesterday. “The bill will never be perfect. But given that we do think this is where the world will eventually head, we’re willing to have a go under this regime as long as the government is open to amendments.”
