...in Russia, climate change is not a hot-button issue, nor is much attention being paid to the upcoming climate summit in Copenhagen. Russian scientists say they have no evidence that global warming is a long-term trend, and doubt whether it is a man-made phenomenon.

"The natural processes we have seen during the past decade are mainly the result of the sun's activity. They show a slight increase in temperature, and as a result, Arctic ice has receded," [Nikolai Babich] says.

But according to Babich, the situation is changing. The Arctic, he says, is already cooling, not warming. And the Russian government is attentively listening to those scientists who, like Babich, are predicting a cold spell.

Sisyphos and the climate

I am even more concerned that a lot of people are getting tired of the climate change topic and simply don't care. Is there a danger of "overkill" in our media coverage? I was giving a training session to some young journalists yesterday and some of them told me about a project they were planning dealing with that very subject. They have the feeling that there is so much attention to the topic that global warming is starting to leave people cold. (Sorry!)

They are viewed by the less educated as a privileged class making alarming and impudent claims for their own benefit. Actually, a lot more lies – because there has been no warming, since at least 1998. Every “dataset” one can obtain has had the truth mangled out of it. The raw data has been destroyed. Those who controlled the data violated the public trust.

Now, I can hear the objections. "We aren't talking about not having energy," the environmentalists say. "We want wind and solar". But they have no clue that you can't have wind and solar without oil, coal and natural gas. The wind tubines are made with resins that are petroleum based. No oil. No wind turbine. As for solar, to make a solar cell requires ovens with between 500 and 1400 deg C. That takes oil, coal or natural gas. As we march into that new low carbon footprint world of no jobs, we should know that wind and solar won't happen without carbon.
