Resolute Bay: Still really really cold
...Its average annual temperature clocks in at about -16 C.

On Monday, in late morning in dull sun, Air North landed with the Olympic flame on Resolute's runway headlong into a windy -44 C, so cold that once the Olympic torches hit the ground running, they wouldn't stay lit, their propane fuel instantly liquifying.

If the sled dogs -- which are tied up to barrels near the water's edge, and running loose all over town -- keep the bears away, the cold is all-pervasive, so frigid that your extremities freeze within minutes. The ice is so thick on the windows of the torch relay convoy vehicles that visibility is virtually nil.

Canadian oilsands "represent one of the few growth areas" outside of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, a body dominated by countries in the Persian Gulf region and Africa.
