Senator Minchin openly defied his leader's position during the Senate debate yesterday, arguing the bills were an "abomination" and deserved to be rejected for a second time.
"It is literally crazy to be committing to an ETS (emissions trading scheme) before seeing the outcome of Copenhagen . . . and frankly idiotic before we see the final form of the US emissions trading scheme," Senator Minchin said, flanked by at least 10 Liberal senators who have supported his anti-ETS views.

Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner ridiculed Senator Minchin over earlier statements he had made saying the left had seized on climate change as an issue after the fall of communism.
''Senator Minchin is incubating a kind of rural militia from backwoods Montana in the Senate. He is out there in his fatigues. He has the bandanna wrapped around his head … and he is off chasing all those global conspiracies. The big problem here, unfortunately, is that he is holding the rest of Australia hostage in this process,'' Mr Tanner said.
