How is it that the government of China, which is clearly reluctant to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, doesn’t seem to have any qualms with this science?...And what about the scientists themselves? Where’s the upside? Normally to posit a giant conspiracy you need some plausible account of the motives.
The real crime in Climategate
The criminals are not limited to The Team, the climate scientists and paleoclimatologists whose emails and files were leaked to the public.

A section of politically active scientists, policy makers, politicians and NGOs in effect put on white coats and told us that our planet was gravely ill, and that we needed to follow their prescriptive advice to save ourselves from a deadly disease. That's really how they framed the discussion, and they classified everyone who disagreed as a denier, like a smoker dismissing his cough and waving away the X-Rays.

"...Where’s the upside?..." the upside is called "political correctness" and provides protection from all kinds of attacks in the political arena. China is under pressure to stay politically correct so it can continue exporting its products to "green" countries.
