Ban said he had gotten two hours of sleep in the last 48 hours, had not been to his hotel since Friday morning and had skipped a couple meals. After that, he excused himself and allowed an underling to take over. Was he going off to sleep? No way. He went to address the climate negotiators.

But as bad as Ban looked, he couldn't hold a flickering candle to AP's own Karl Ritter, the chief of our climate negotiations bureau. When they could stay open, Ritter's eyes were bloodshot and he looked like hell. He had been awake and working 30 straight hours. He finally left the building at about 12:30 p.m.

Just who the heck is that guy running the show?

When the Danish prime minister was pushed aside as president of the climate talks, he was replaced by one of his seven vice presidents, who wielded the gavel during some of the tensest moments.

Trouble was, the tired Associated Press team couldn't figure out who the new president of the conference was. So we did what reporters do _ ask public relations people. The UN spokespeople, equally fatigued, couldn't solve the puzzle either

At the end of next year, a new climate summit is to be held in Mexico. Minister Cramer said world leaders probably will attend the summit. ,,The presence of ministers and the prime minister did change the tone of voice of the negotiations considerably.

She drew her conclusions for the future: "In this time and age the globalized world will never be bound in a treaty.''
