I don't normally pay much attention to the weather. But a few months ago it was unavoidable. A thick, choking cloud of dust had enveloped Sydney and made it look like a scene from "Apocalypse Now".

It was a once-in-a-lifetime event which sent climate change right back into the public consciousness and, incidentally, made a mess of my shiny new car.

The retreat of Danish climate minister Connie Hedegaard as president of the U.N. climate talks led to buzzing rumours on corridors in Copenhagen as well as in the European Capital. Of all interpretations of this surprising move, this one seemed to be the most legit: Hence Mrs Hedegaard and Danish Prime Minister Lars Lökke Rasmussen have had - alleged - issues concerning the way the negotiations should be guided, which led to her stepping down.

This also casts a shadow on Mrs. Hedegaards future career as designated EU-Comissioner
