Indonesian government looking to cash in on the climate scam?
The blue print on a national plan of action on climate change, which was launched by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during the climate change conference in Bali in 2007, states that Indonesia’s marine biodiversity can absorb some 67 million tonnes of carbon, equal to about 245.6 million tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) per year.

The decline of Richard Littlemore: Alarmist journalist reduced to railing at real scientists
The question, for Dr. Ball - an expert with no credentials and, increasingly, an advocate with no audience - is this: If he would have us criticize Hansen and Weaver for alarmism - for "frightening people" in a theatre that is about to be engulfed in flames - what accusation would he hurl at the usher who blocks the door and recommends people return to their seats and ignore the smoke already curling around their head.

I'd suggest "criminal negligence" at the least, especially if that "usher" truly had above-average scientific understanding and was particularly able to assess the risk.

As the bodies start piling up, others may prescribe more dramatic charge - perhaps some variation of "deadly irresponsibility." In the first degree.
Marc Morano and Joe Romm debate the politics of climate change :: Milo Yiannopoulos
"It was funny to hear Romm citing how many governments support the AGW [anthropogenic global warming] claims," Marc wrote to me afterwards. "Romm used that point to 'prove' the 'science' was settled. Very alarming."

I've corresponded with Marc via email on several occasions. Each time, I've been impressed with his grasp of the science surrounding climate change. In this debate, he pretty much nails cap-and-trade, the "wealthy white politics" of the climate lobby and the flaws in the IPCC process.

There's a superb analysis of the debate over at Newsbusters - including a response from Romm.

Christopher Booker: Yet more mind-boggling figures on global warming - Telegraph
So this independent expert was asked to peer review the method used by an “independent” committee (which he had already been working for) to produce figures that seem rather to have been plucked from the thin air of which only 0.04 per cent – one 2,500th – consists of the self-same carbon dioxide which we are now expected to believe we will benefit by £1 trillion from not emitting. Truly we are governed these days by stark, raving lunacy – and no one is meant to notice.

Global Warming - Fact or Fiction?
But green leaders maintain that even if some warming is consistent with millennial cycles, something is triggering the current change. According to the nonprofit Environmental Defense, some possible (natural) explanations include increased output from the sun, increased absorption of the sun’s heat due to a change in the Earth’s reflectivity, or a change in the internal climate system that transfers heat to the atmosphere.

But scientists have not been able to validate any such reasons for the current warming trend, despite exhaustive efforts. And a raft of recent peer reviewed studies—many which take advantage of new satellite data—back up the claim that it is emissions from tailpipes, smokestacks (and now factory farmed food animals, which release methane) that are causing potentially irreparable damage to the environment.

Jay Ambrose: Obama administration wrong place to look for common-sense energy policy - SalemNews.com, Salem, MA
Because Democrats abandoned a plan to use a Senate squelch-the-minority maneuver to pass a disastrous cap-and-trade carbon tax, the idea may be done for this year. But don't give thanks too quickly.

It's far from dead and buried and other disastrous energy policies are being readied for public infliction. Before the Obama administration and its congressional allies are done, we could be reeling from one of the most extraordinary spectacles in American political history — a wholly misguided war against our own self-interests as a people.

Scientific evidence to the contrary, these 'skeptics' continue to argue that taking action against climate change is unnecessary and will cripple our economy, send American jobs overseas, and generally destroy our way of life. None of this is true.

Still living in 2007: The green scene is [allegedly] taking over America - Times-Standard Online
News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch, a billionaire and an unlikely environmentalist, set 2010 as the corporation's carbon neutral target. This was a big 360-degree turn-around after voicing skepticism about global warming following the screening of Al Gore's Oscar-winning documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth.” (A film that was Carbon Neutral by following their own advice).

Carbon neutral is the hot ticket in filming these days, kicked off with “Syriana,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” and “There Will be Blood,” to name a few. After the credits roll, they typically give credit to the production being 100 percent carbon neutral.

This is definitely a process where strong math skills will come in handy. First, consultants measure the carbon dioxide output that is estimated to be used during a production, then methods are used to cut energy consumption and usage during a production. This includes flights, driving hybrids or using bio-diesel, electricity conservation methods, and recycling. Even using locally grown organic food for catering can add to the equation.

SET Energy » Blog Archive » US Govt Report: Wind and solar still small in 2030
Wind & Solar Remain Small

In the reference case, the EIA expect wind and solar to remain mice compared to the elephants of fossil fuels. Wind grows to 44 GW (p. 48) or 2.5% of US electricity, only 75% higher than the ~25 GW at the end of 2008. It would take only 2 1/2 years at 2008’s 8+ GW growth rate for 44 GW to be reached. Seems to me they are short-changing wind power.

Solar is dismissed even further into the margins. Growth is expected to make solar less than half the size of wind today by 2030 (p. 140), rather than its potential greater than 100 GW in my opinion. Their models have probably not incorporated the 30+% solar modules price drop currently taking place since last summer. It’s clear that the industry will have to prove themselves to EIA officials in coming months that they can emerge profitable in 2010 despite module prices below $2.50 per watt.

This is the generation that must also stop the spread of the pollution that is slowly killing our planet, from shrinking coastlines and devastating storms to widespread misery and famine and drought. The effects of climate change are now in plain sight.

Europe has acted with a seriousness of purpose that this challenge demands. And in the last few months I'm proud to say that America has begun to take unprecedented steps to transform the way that we use energy. We appointed a special envoy to help us lead a global effort to reduce the carbon that we send in the atmosphere.

But we all know that time is running out. And that means that America must do more. Europe must do more. China and India must do more. Rolling back the tide of a warming planet is a responsibility that we have to ourselves, to our children, and all of those who will inherit God's creation long after we are gone. So let us meet that responsibility together. I am confident that we can meet it. But we have to begin today. (Applause.)

In Hot Water: Energy and Climate Bill is Really, Really Comprehensive - Environmental Capital - WSJ
The efficiency section gets attention, which is odd considering other seemingly crucial points were glossed over. The 648-page bill did not dedicate a single line to addressing big-picture questions such as how carbon-emissions permits will be distributed or what will be done with the presumptive cap-and-trade revenues.

Yet the bill’s authors took the time to dictate new efficiency standards in excruciating detail. If you’re planning on putting a slanted roof on a new house, get ready for one standard for “initial solar reflectance” for “fiberglass asphalt-shingle roofing,” and a different standard for other types of shingles.

Or take light fixtures. The bill found 10 pages just for portable lighting. If you’re curious, that means a new raft of standards for things like “art work light fixtures”—and yes, those are the lights affixed on the bottom of picture frames. Christmas lights, on the other hand, escape any new regulation.

Certain appliances also got the juices flowing. Reflecting perhaps California’s disproportionate influence in Congress these days—Henry Waxman is the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee—one sub-section is dedicated to something called “portable electric spas.” Yes, that’s just what it sounds like.

Many students across the Northland got an extra week of vacation this school year, thanks to the weather.

“I have been doing this a long time, and I don’t think I have ever closed school quite this many times,” Lake Superior Superintendent Phil Minkkinen said. Minkkinen has been a superintendent for about 17 years. “This is definitely not the norm.”

A snowstorm that dumped more than 10 inches on the North Shore closed the Lake Superior school district Wednesday for the fifth time this year. Students also were let out early on Tuesday.

High tide for wind power?
It will not have gone unnoticed by many people that settled spells of either very cold or very hot weather coincide with static areas of high pressure, which are also characterised by periods of calm. Just when electricity demand is at its peak, the preferred renewable energy source fails to deliver anything.

This is essentially the basis of a rather good spoof piece of news circulating on 1st April. Like all good April Fool jokes, this had a degree of believability to draw in the unsuspecting reader. Starting with some commentary about the proposed Severn barrage providing predictable but fluctuating power, it moved on to the suggested introduction of flexible working patterns, school hours and timing of sporting fixtures based on the tide tables. And finally, there was a proposal by the wind industry to reschedule weekends and public holidays at short notice depending on the expected weather forecast.

If wind power is becoming the butt of such jokes, someone should tell Ed Miliband that his vision of opposition to wind farms becoming socially unacceptable is unlikely to fly. Especially if the wind isn't blowing.
Bowdoin: Climate scam swallowed whole
The April Climate Days look to spice up—not heat up—campus next week.

Organized by the President's Climate Commitment Advisory Committee, the events include a Climate Fair, the results of the Climate Matters Contest, and a Common Hour lecture with environmental advocate Majora Carter.

The top five proposals tackle the College's carbon emissions from a spectrum of angles. While one proposal suggests installing a "windmill field" on the Naval Air Station land, another recommends consolidating fall and Thanksgiving breaks, so that less energy is used in travel and re-opening the school twice. A third suggests raising the vehicle registration fee (Bowdoin's is one of the lowest in the NESCAC) and implementing a new parking policy under which cars could only be parked on the main campus for five or ten minutes.
A lesson from the G20 - to save the environment, get shopping | Matthew Taylor's blog
All the politicians and advisors I have spoken to recently about prospects for the Copenhagen climate change summit have been pessimistic. Not only are there the usual issues between the already developed and the developing nations (which are currently resurfacing at the UN climate change talks in Bonn), but with energy consumption and oil prices down because of the recession there is also a danger of complacency.

Indeed, for the environmentalists who protested against the G20 and the grossly inadequate response of global leaders to climate change, there is a bitter irony. If the global economy does not pick up, popular enthusiasm for international agreements will fade, climate change will look less important as a threat and action to tackle it unaffordable; the Copenhagen moment will pass and who knows when another opportunity for real concerted action will come.

So, far from rejoicing in the collapse of global capitalism, if you are green you should be praying for a return to growth. In fact, forget recycling, the greenest thing to do right now is to dust off the credit card and get out there shopping.

In the UK, for example, three quarters of people believe that making changes to their travel habits, such as flying or driving less, will have a 'medium or major impact' on reducing the nation's carbon footprint. Yet only a third are willing to adopt these measures, and even fewer think that the public as a whole will do so...

Instead of 'forcing' people to go green, say the researchers, we should be emphasising the local and personal benefits of climate change mitigation. This includes the financial savings associated with energy efficiency measures, as well as improved personal fitness and air quality due to reduced reliance on transport.

Who Will Profit from [the] Climate Change [Scam]?
Insiders say Michael Bloomberg, New York's independent mayor, has an explicit plan to encourage Wall Street to pull itself out of the dumps by financing renewable energy, "smart grid" technologies and other green innovations.

"A lot of trading is going to reside here in New York," said Peter Fusaro, chairman of Global Change Associates and organizer of the Green Trading Summit. "I can see nirvana coming."

But the momentum building almost guarantees fresh excesses and abuses of the kind that came with previous Wall Street booms.

[Dr David Evans] No one knows for sure what caused the little ice age or for how many more centuries the slow warming trend will continue. It has been warmer than the present for much of the 10 thousand years since the last big ice age: it was a little warmer for a few centuries in the medieval warm period around 1100 (when Greenland was settled for grazing) and also during the Roman-Climate Optimum at the time of the Roman Empire (when grapes grew in Scotland), and at least 1°C warmer for much of the Holocene Climate Optimum (4 to 8 thousand years ago).
Via Instapundit: How much total fossil-fuel will be burned by eco-hero Obama's trip to Europe?
IF THIS IS TRUE, WE CLEARLY NEED MORE AIRPLANES: “President Obama’s European visit this week has strained Air Force heavy-airlift capabilities and obliged the military to hire more foreign contractors to help resupply U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan, according to military sources. The large delegation traveling with the president in Europe required moving several transports, including jumbo C-5s and C-17s, from sorties ferrying supplies to Afghanistan to European bases for the presidential visit, said two military officials familiar with the issue. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid any misunderstanding with White House officials.”

Alternatively, either (1) Obama could take a smaller-than-500 entourage; or (2) Some of these people could have flown commercial. One thing’s for sure — this would have been a bigger story if it had been Bush.

I'm encouraged that we laid the groundwork for real and lasting progress on a host of these issues.

We talked about a whole range of other issues related to, for example, energy, and how important it is for the United States to lead by example in reducing our carbon footprint so that we can help to forge agreements with countries like China and India that, on a per-capita basis, have a much smaller footprint and so justifiably chafe at the idea that they should have to sacrifice their development for our efforts to control climate change; but also acknowledging that if China and India, with their populations, had the same energy usage as the average American, then we would have all melted by now.

The Senator’s provision requires that any climate legislation passed by the Senate this year does not cause significant job loss, especially in the Midwest, Great Plains and South. "Cap and Tax Collapse: Congress balks at one more bad Obama idea." - WSJ.com
Please pass Al Gore a Valium -- and better make it a double -- because his cap-and-trade dreams just took a dive in the U.S. Senate. In a vote late Wednesday, no fewer than 26 Democrats joined all 41 Republicans to insist that any new cap and tax on carbon energy would require at least 60 votes.

Tennessee Republican Lamar Alexander called it "the biggest vote of the year" so far, and he's right. This means Majority Leader Harry Reid can't jam cap and tax through as part of this year's budget resolution with a bare majority of 50 Senators. More broadly, it's a signal that California and East Coast Democrats won't be able to sock it to coal and manufacturing-heavy Midwestern states without a fight. Senators voting in favor of the 60-vote rule included liberals from Wisconsin, Michigan and West Virginia. Now look for Team Obama to attempt to impose cap and tax the non-democratic way, via regulation that hits business and local governments with such heavy costs that they beg Congress for a less-harmful version.

Until recently, much of the debate on climate change focused on the extent of the threat. But now that House Democratic leaders are planning to take up legislation to set up a mandatory cap-and-trade system for greenhouse emissions sometime this summer, opponents are focusing on the cost.

At Witz' End: My night with range anxiety
Unfortunately, we can't carry a can of volts. If an EV goes dead, you leave it. If you're really lucky, you might get close enough to a home or business whose owner will let you plug in, but what will you do for the next few hours while it slowly charges on house current? The other option is to retrieve it later with a tow truck or flatbed. And forget the rest of your trip.

In my opinion, range anxiety is the single biggest obstacle in the way of widespread consumer acceptance of battery electric vehicles. Every EV at any price can carry only a finite amount of energy and will consume it at a (highly variable) rate dependent on its size, weight, feature content, load, operating efficiency, weather and, yes, operator skill.

Cap and Trade, Cut and Run
The Obama White House has been counting on the Democratic Senate to muscle through its controversial "cap and trade" bill by using the budget reconciliation process -- making it possible to enact the costly carbon tax plan with 51 votes rather than the 60 usually needed to cut off debate before a measure can be enacted.

That strategy was dealt a big blow last night after more than two dozen Senate Democrats sided with Republicans in publicly blocking use of the reconciliation loophole. A carbon bill now can't be attached to a budget resolution, one of the few Senate initiatives that under current rules can bypass the 60-vote threshold.

Republican Senator Mike Johanns of Nebraska told reporters he was pleased that every Republican voted for his proposal, along with 26 Democrats. He said that many of his Democratic supporters opposed the reconciliation loophole on grounds of Senate procedure and tradition, but were also frankly leery of hitting voters with visibly higher prices for everything from electricity to gasoline.

"There are huge economic consequences to cap-and-trade legislation," Mr. Johanns said. "It will impact everybody."

Would it be completely sustainable to shred 700 tires for each and every child in the world?

British scientist blames China's brutal 2008 winter on global warming?

Note that CO2 caused China's 2008 snow to melt so quickly that only nearly 500,000 buildings collapsed
