OFFICIALS in the Government's green quango took 120 short-haul flights last year while telling others NOT to fly.
Environment Agency staff made 174 short hops to British and nearby European cities, costing the taxpayer £164,320.
But for two-thirds of the trips, they could have taken the train, The Sun can reveal.
The quango's job is to protect and improve the environment. Its website asks visitors: "Do you really need to take that flight? Why not travel to Europe by train?"
But in 2008-09, agency staff took 51 flights to Edinburgh, 26 to Brussels, 16 to Newcastle, 15 to Paris and 12 to Bristol.
All have high-speed rail links.
