The State of the Union, Through Green-Tinted Glasses - Working In These Times
Maybe it's chilly weather, or political fatigue from Copenhagen debacle, or the fact that a climate change skeptic appears to have abruptly extinguished the Democrats' brittle Senate majority. Or it could just simply be the pain of the recession that is cooling political attitudes toward global warming.

Whatever the reason, a new Pew Research Center poll puts climate change at the bottom of a heap of pressing national issues, with the economy and jobs topping the list. Pew concluded that “while many factors may have contributed to this outcome, the struggling national economy is a likely determinant of the softened support levels.”

In his first major speech to Congress last February, President Barack Obama backed up his campaign rhetoric by promising to push for a cap-and-trade system, asking lawmakers to “send me legislation that places a market-based cap on carbon pollution and drives the production of more renewable energy in America.”

But as Democrats nervously eye the midterm elections and Obama plans a heavy focus on the economy Wednesday, some predict a more general endorsement of creating jobs in “clean energy” sectors that omits an explicit plea for emissions limits.

Earlier today, 1,198 state legislators sent a letter to President Obama and Congress calling for prompt enactment of “comprehensive clean energy jobs and climate change legislation.” It calls for strong legislation in order to create jobs and increase national security while also protecting against the risks posed by climate change.

The letter, which has signatures of representatives from 49 states including over two dozen Republicans, was sent by the Coalition of Legislators for Energy Action Now (CLEAN), a bipartisan coalition of state lawmakers that formed in October 2009 to push for strong national climate action.
